Scrapbooking Tags

Scrapbooking tags are a fun page accent.

Tags create visual interest, color and texture for your scrapbook page layouts. Size, shape and color are limited only by your imagination. Textures can vary with tags made from fabrics, papers, chipboard, metal and more.

There are many ways to include scrapbooking tags on your pages. They can be used for journaling, matting photos or memorabilia, captions, quotes, a page title or simply as a fun accent to your page.

Many craft and scrapbooking stores sell scrapbook tags you can buy ready to decorate and use. They come in die cuts, punch-outs, stickers and regular tags.

If you're feeling creative try making your own. Simply cut them out free hand or use a tag template. Some common shapes for scrapbook tags are rectangular, square, circles and oval. Unique shapes add spice to your layouts also.

How to make or customize scrapbooking tags

Making your own scrapbook tags is fun and simple. It's a great way to use up some of the leftover scraps from your page layouts. Follow these simple steps to create unique tags for your scrapbooking projects.

Theme

Decide on a theme for your tags, keep it simple. A theme can be based on the scrapbook page you're working on, the pictures you're using or the embellishments and papers you may want to use (what scraps do you have laying around).

Color Scheme

Pull colors from the photos, papers and stickers that you have or from the overall theme you are working with (seasonal such as Christmas or Halloween) that have typical colors associated with them.

Base for Tag

There are several ways to create a base for your tag. Pre-made tags – Purchase tags from your craft/scrapbooking store.

  • Punch out tags – Use a punch or die cut to create your tags. This is a great way to use up some left over card stock or paper.
  • Template – Use a template to cut out your tags. This gives you an easy way to create the size and shape of the scrapbook tabs.
  • Free Hand – Use your imagination to create tags in any size or shape. A simple free hand tag can be made by cutting a rectangle from desired paper. Sizes such as 2” X 4” or 1” X 3” work well, but you can cut any size that works for your layout. Choose a narrow end and cut the corners at a 45 degree angle.

Decorate Tag

Use color and texture to add interest to your scrapbook tags. Brads, eyelets, ribbons, fibers, stickers and papers work well. Stick with 2 or 3 elements, don't over-do it. Punch a hole and add a string or ribbon if desired.

Add to Page

There are several methods to attach your tag to the page. You can simply use adhesive, or try using ribbon, string or a brad to attach the tag.
