Themes

Choosing a theme is a great way to unify your album, or a page. For a themed album, all photos chosen for the entire album would relate to your chosen theme.

You could include photos from your summer vacations each year. This is one of the easiest scrapbook page layout ideas for beginners.

Another way to create continuity throughout your album is to pick a theme for the background and embellishments to carry throughout the album. This method makes selecting papers, colors and embellishments easier, but they may not compliment some photos as well as others.

A theme can also unify a page. You can design your page or 2 page spread around a theme. All photos, memorabilia and embellishments should tie together to give the layout a finished look.

Cropping Photos

Cropping photos can help fit more photos on a page and create a pleasing layout. Distracting backgrounds can be removed. The focus within the photo can be changed by cropping.

Rectangles and squares are common shapes. Circles and ovals are also pleasing to the eye. Avoid using too many different shapes. This can lead to a page lout that looks too busy.

Arranging Photos

Arrange photos to create a balanced finished look. Three to five photos will generally fit on a page. If you want to include more photos a two page spread may work well.

Remember you don't have to include all of the photos you take in your scrapbooks. This is a place to showcase your best photos.

You can choose a photo to be the main focal point. The eye will start with that photo, then travel through the rest of the page.

The other photos can support the theme established by te main photo. Overlapping or angling one or two photos can create more visual impact.

Try moving your photos around to find a balanced look. When you are satisfied you can move on to mounting your photos.

Balance

The rule of thirds places focus of your subject on the lines where the page is divided into thirds, horizontally or vertically.

This creates more interest and visual impact. Points where the lines intersect are can be called hot spots, and are key places to focus on.

Make sure the eyes of the people are looking toward the center of your page or layout. Eyes looking toward the edge of the page can lead the eyes of the view off the page.

Repeat colors, textures and shapes to create continuity in your pages layouts.

Odd numbers of photos and embellishments tend to give your layouts a more finished feel.

Color

Choose colors that are complimentary to your photos. A good rule of thumb is to choose colors found in the photos.

Colors can set the mood for your page. Bright colors work better than dull or muted colors for a summer bbq, while muted colors would work well with heritage photos. For some this scrapbook page layout ideas seems difficult. Don't be afraid of color.

Embellishments

A few well placed stickers or diecuts can polish the look of a scrapbook page layout. Remember not to go overboard. The pictures should be the focus of the page. Embellishments should enhance the photos, not overpower them.
