Digital Photo Organizing Tips

Follow these simple digital photo organizing tips for amazing results. Digital cameras are wonderful.

The only limit to how many pictures you can take is the size of your memory card. As you download pictures from your camera to your computer they can accumulate.

It is frustrating to search through hundreds or thousands of digital pictures to find a certain one.

Find an organizing system that works for you. This will take the stress out of finding and enjoying your digital photos.

Here are some digital photo organizing tips to simplify your scrapbooking projects.

Delete Unwanted Pictures

As you download your pictures delete unwanted pictures, such as blurry shots, or the one where your thumb was over the lens. You can delete pictures from the camera, or after you have downloaded them onto your computer.

Don't clutter up your hard drive with these photos. This is a simple digital photo organizing tip. To delete photos using Windows xp or Vista you can

  • Double click the photo to open it, select the red x (lower right).

  • Right click the photo and select Delete from the menu.

Most photo organizing software also allow you to delete photos from the photo library.

Name Your Pictures

Give your pictures descriptive names. This will help you identify pictures later. Use Yellowstone_camping_2008.jpg instead of camping.jpg. Be consistent with your names.

If you are renaming a few pictures you can rename them by right clicking the photo. Select Rename from the menu and type the new name. To rename larger groups, try renaming in batches.

To rename photos individually

  • Open the folder of pictures to rename.

  • Highlight the images you want to rename, select Edit / Select All (ctrl A) if you want to rename all images.

  • Right click the first image in the folder, select Rename.

  • Enter a descriptive name that will work for all the images. Such as Yellowstone_Camping_2008.jpg

  • Windows XP/Vista will rename all the files in the folder, adding a number to the name.

Tag Your Photos

Along with giving your photos a descriptive name, giving them a tag will help you find photos later. A tag attaches a keyword(s) to the image file.

You can search for files with a certain tag if you don't remember the exact file name. You could use Yellowstone or Camping for the file name Yellowstone_Camping_2008.jpg.

I like this digital photo organizing tip. Some photo organization software programs will allow you to add tags to your digital photos.

This can also be done with Windows Vista. Here's how

  • Double click the image to open it in Windows Photo Gallery.

  • Select the Info tab.

  • Click the Add Tags button on the left and enter any keywords you want.

Folder Structure

Make finding your digital pictures easier by creating a folder structure with descriptive names. You can start with folders for each year with sub-folders for each month, or event.

Another option would be to create folders for each event with sub-folders for the year and month.

Find a system that works for you. Remember to be consistent.

Photo Organizing Software

If you prefer you can use software programs that are designed to organize and edit your digital images. Some of these programs can scan the hard drive of your computer and import the image files that it finds.

Some of these programs are free, and some can be purchased.

What are you waiting for? Let's get going. It's ok if it takes awhile to finish. Put these simple digital photo organizing tips to use.
